Gas Cookers and Electric Cookers: Modern Day Cooking Choices

By Rick Jarman

Life without fire is unimaginable. Long ago our ancestors used fire to cook raw meat, to keep themselves warm during the harsh winters and as a tool to frighten away wild animals. Life has evolved since then and so has the importance of fire to mankind. Fire is now considered precious and sacred. People pray to the fire god during holy rituals of several religions and the sun is believed to be "god of fire".

Fire also acted as a protective measure because wild animals could not approach a dwelling where fire was burning. Today man has harnessed fire especially for cooking and has produced cookers that can cook and bake at extremely fast speeds.

There are predominantly two major cookers that one can encounter when they enter into a home or an apartment. These are electric cookers and gas cookers. Gas cookers are more prevalent in homes while electric cookers can be found in many apartment homes and town homes. These two are popular and very safe and that is why they account for over 90% of the market share when it comes to cookers.

The modern electric cooker is very easy to operate. The oven is the main part of the electric cooker and this oven consists mostly of four to six coils that are electrically-heated. Knob-like buttons are used to turn the cooker off and on. Electric cookers are preferable for nearly every household as they are safer and they run on electricity. The only bill you get is the cost of the electricity used to run the cooker. The professional electric cooker has gone through a lot of technological modifications and the latest version comes with a variety of options to choose from.

Professional cooks generally prefer gas cookers to cook up a recipe. The reason is that flames and cooker distances are easily adjustable. In gas cookers, an oven is attached to the wall. It is also attached to the gas pipes which are secured under the kitchen and which travel outside to the main gas conduit. A gas company administers the gas in the same way as electricity is administered by the electric company. The home owner then receives a bill every month. Gas is quite safe and the flame can be lit with a match stick or a lighter by anybody.

The disadvantage with gas is that it is considered as a utility and we have to pay separately for the gas. Previously gas had no odor and if a there was a gas leak, it was not known. This sometimes caused loss of life and property. But the latest addition is that the gas in the cylinders is scented with a typical scent which can be detected in the case of leakage.

Some of the drawbacks of electric cookers are that there are inherent faults with fuses; the hob isn't very easy to clean and children can pull the tubes of the gas connection. As compared to that, electric cookers are very versatile.

You can get these electronic cookers at most departmental stores and shops selling electronic goods. If you are moving into a new place, you will surely get an electronic cooker already installed there. So, you will not need to shop for it anymore.
